The system selects a random five-letter word, and the user has up to 6 attempts to guess it. After each guess, the system provides feedback:

Sounds simple? Many candidates might laugh at the idea—"Isn’t this just a guessing game?" Not so fast. From implementation logic to state management and edge case reasoning, this question tested far more than surface-level coding. On the day of the interview, the candidate joined Bloomberg’s remote session, and the interviewer casually said, “Let’s start with something light—implement a version of Wordle.”

This is where most candidates panic. Fortunately, our team had anticipated this system-level twist. As the candidate hesitated, we pushed another detailed prompt: “Avoid hardcoded word length. Make word size and attempt count configurable. Adapt logic to support Unicode input for broader language support.”
The candidate took a beat and then articulated this scalable design, even mentioning how Unicode sets can be leveraged for broader internationalization. The interviewer responded, impressed, “You’ve thought through this quite thoroughly.”
Later in the session, another advanced question landed: “If this game runs in a concurrent environment, with many users guessing different words, could shared state be a problem? How would you isolate and secure each game session?”
This shifted into systems design territory. We immediately prompted: “Use object-oriented design. Each user should have a separate game instance. Store state in session memory or user-specific context to avoid clashes.” The candidate echoed this back confidently and even added their own insight about exception handling. The interviewer’s demeanor visibly relaxed.
Across the 45-minute interview, the candidate faced 7 in-depth follow-ups covering algorithm edge cases, state safety, configuration, multilingual support, and system design.
